(EBSI-Vector Information Pills: Strategy III)

As part of EBSI-VECTOR analysis activities, the European Self Sovereign Identity Framework (ESSIF) was evaluated to identify areas for improvement and propose enhancements for better supporting digital interactions for citizens, organizations, and businesses. The evaluation targeted sectors such as education (verifiable diplomas and secondary school certificates), social security (PDA-1), and business registries. A comprehensive analysis of ESSIF’s current infrastructure, including technical, legal, and governance dimensions, was conducted. The methodology involved comparing ESSIF’s “as-is” state with a desired “to-be” state, identifying gaps and proposing necessary improvements, especially aligning with the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation and the European Architecture Reference Framework (ARF).

Key Findings and Recommendations:

  • Alignment with eIDAS 2.0: Stronger coordination with eIDAS 2.0 is needed to ensure interoperability and coherence across the European digital identity landscape.
  • Revocation Mechanisms: The evaluation addressed complexities around credential and identity revocation, emphasizing the need for standardized, robust processes.
  • EBSI Enterprise Wallet: This modular service is crucial for secure management of digital assets and interactions, supporting organizational needs.
  • Verifiable Credentials: The analysis highlighted the importance of privacy features like selective disclosure and qualified signatures in compliance with eIDASv2.
  • Lifecycle Management of DIDs & Credentials: The management of decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials, including consent management, status changes, and expiration, was emphasized.

Conclusion: This evaluation served as a foundation for future ESSIF developments, ensuring its alignment with European regulations and enhancing its capacity to meet the growing demands of secure digital interactions. By strengthening interoperability and governance, ESSIF can support a trusted digital ecosystem across the EU.

These findings are fully documented in Deliverable D3.1:” Evaluation of the current ESSIF implementation and legal/governance framework with focus on the 1st implementation phase”. We encourage you to explore it in detail.

We hope you enjoyed this 3rd EBSI-VECTOR Information Pill. The next EBSI-VECTOR information pill “Driving a Solid Ecosystem for the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI)” (to be published on April 18) will be the final installment of the “Strategy” section. Starting next week (Monday, April 21), we will launch a new section: “Specifications”, which will focus on the technical aspects related to the implementation of the previously described framework in the EBSI-VECTOR project use cases.

We look forward to sharing the upcoming information pills with you!
