(EBSI-Vector Information Pills: Specifications III)

One of the most notable efforts carried out by EBSI-VECTOR is the definition of the requirements for implementing a reference enterprise wallet within the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI). The goal is to provide an easy-to-adopt solution for entities that wish to issue and verify Verifiable Credentials (VCs) but lack the resources to utilize existing specifications. What follows is a brief summary of the process’s main features:

  • Initial Use Cases: the business requirements for use cases such as diploma and certificate management and social security were considered. These scenarios helped identify the key functionalities needed in the reference enterprise wallet.
  • Approach and Methodology:  the approach was incremental and collaborative. A proposal for the wallet’s capabilities and architecture was developed, with input from various stakeholders and partners. Detailed specifications were created, focusing on identifying requirements, necessary components, and potential use cases.
  • Regulations and Reference Frameworks: the process considered various regulations, including EBSI Conformance Guidelines, OpenID for Verifiable Credentials, W3C Verifiable Presentations, eIDAS2 and GDPR.
  • Key Results:
    • A set of capabilities and requirements for the reference enterprise wallet was identified.
    • Components necessary for integration were defined, including a frontend with admin interfaces and a backend with an API, microservices, a database, and a Key Management System (KMS).
    • The wallet’s specifications were detailed, with two main methods for VC data acquisition: manual entry and data retrieval from existing repositories.
    • Integration services with legacy systems were described, including obtaining data from credential holders and managing pre-authorized codes.

This initiative marks a key advancement in defining a reference enterprise wallet for the EBSI ecosystem. The flexible adoption options (isolated, integrated, or microservice) aim to meet the diverse needs of users, enhancing interoperability and trust within European digital identity systems.

These findings are fully documented in Deliverable D3.5: “Specification for the reference implementation of an issuer and verifier wallet for EBSI. Identification of quick wins and fast track development to support 1st implementation phase”. We encourage you to explore it further.

We look forward to sharing the upcoming information pills with you!
