(EBSI-Vector Information Pills: Specifications II)

A key aspect of EBSI-VECTOR project is the strategic positioning of EBSI conformant wallets within the broader eIDAS and future European Digital Identity (EUDI) context. Thus, decentralized identity wallets, also known as EBSI conformant wallets, play a critical role this ecosystem, and as a result, the project focused on specific lines of action:

  • Support the EBSI conformant wallets in the eIDAS certification for low/substantial LoA (Levels of Assurance) and using qualified and non-qualified attestation. EBSI-VECTOR is establishing a robust certification framework for wallets, supporting assurance levels (LoA) low and substantial. By defining Q(EEA) profiles and governance rules, the project ensures interoperability and enables use cases to select qualified or non-qualified attestations based on sector and legal requirements. This approach meets immediate business needs while paving the way for future EUDI Wallet integration
  • First production implementation of the verifiable credentials framework in education and social security.  The project is driving large-scale adoption of verifiable credentials, with initial rollouts in education (2024) and social security (2025). By deploying EBSI-compliant wallets aligned with eIDAS, EBSI-VECTOR delivers immediate cross-border credential verification, bridging the gap until the EUDI Wallet reaches full maturity
  • Enhancing Capabilities and Standards for the Verifiable Credentials Framework. New VC features—revocation, selective disclosure, and multi-language support—are being developed based on sector-specific requirements (education/social security). Testing revealed critical insights, such as the need for stable specifications and strict adherence to W3C standards. These advancements will inspire EUDI Wallet development.
  • Interoperability and transition of EBSI conformant to EUDI wallets for use cases. EBSI-VECTOR is facilitating a seamless transition from EBSI-compliant to EUDI-certified wallets by aligning with the EUDI Architecture Reference Framework (ARF) and integrating lessons learned from projects like DC4EU. Dual wallet operation in 2024 ensures continuity, with migration to EUDI solutions prioritized for 2025.

Conclusion:

These coordinated actions represent a significant step forward in deploying EBSI-based verifiable credentials for education and social security. By collaborating with wallet providers and focusing on conformity, interoperability, and stakeholder engagement, EBSI-VECTOR is laying the foundation for a robust, scalable, and user-centric digital identity ecosystem in Europe—fully aligned with eIDAS and the future EUDI Wallet vision.
